Burrowing bee - Ian Joass

In the middle of spring, a large number of burrowing bees (family Halictidae) start tunnelling into the sand around our house and will rush out and buzz threateningly if anything comes too close. I took this photo while the bee was in the act of trying to scare me off. You can see the large, spiny front legs for digging and behind the bee you can see its burrow.
