Breast ornament called a gurrsaab (gura sab) by the Meriam people, Mer (Murray Isaland), Torres Strait. Size 12x8.8 cm.

Notes

Breast ornament made of reed and rattan, decorated with feathers, palm fibre and red seeds. It is said to be worn on the chest as an abstention token. The wearer vows to abstain from yams, bananas and coconuts, but may eat fish and sweet potatoes. It was collected for the Museum by C. Hedley and A.R. McCulloch in 1907.
