Aboriginal shield illustrated by C A Lesueur

Aboriginal shield, probably from Sydney region, illustrated by artist C. A. Lesueur, reproduced in Peron & Fraycient 1824.

Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) was a French naturalist, explorer and artist. He travelled extensively, for years exploring various natural history subjects in North America and India. In 1800 and 1801 he travelled with Nicolas Baudin, as part of a scientific expedition to Australia. It was at that time he illustrated a selection of Aboriginal artefacts, some evidently in Sydney, where the French expedition stopped to replenish supplies and to acquire a new ship, the Casuarina.
