This is the pupal stage of the rare mosquito, Mimomyia elegans. It is uniquely adapted in having extremely long siphons, the elongated structures used for breathing. This is to penetrate through filamentous alga masses that occur in its habitat. This was taken as part of a series on Australian mosquitoes.
