Image Gallery: Fishes by habitat - pelagic fishes
Pelagic fishes are those that spend much of their lives swimming in open water away from the bottom. Typical pelagic fishes include the tunas, marlins, swordfish and trevallies. Pelagic fishes usually have streamlined bodies, often without scales. Some pelagic fishes, however, have quite different body shapes. This is certainly true for the larval stages of some species.
