Did you know that insects comprise 75% of all animal species that scientists have named and described? Insects are an amazingly diverse group of animals that have conquered almost every environment on Earth.

In this exhibition you will see specimens from the Australian Museum's vast insect and invertebrate collections, which are frequently used by scientists and researchers - especially those studying biodiversity and conservation. Spend some time taking a good look at these fascinating creatures and learn about the diversity of their behaviour.

Things to do

  • Learn about the vital role that insects and other invertebrates play in the food chain and explore their ecology, flight, evolution and the fascinating world of insect reproduction.
  • Compare the different types of funnel-web spiders and get up close to a European wasp and a scorpion.
  • Find out how insects avoid predators including by deception, camouflage, mimicry or by injecting venom.
  • See the Australian Upside-down Fly and the Hairy Cicada.
  • Enjoy the visual beauty of the butterfly display and view the inside of an ant colony.
  • Browse through the Museum Shop on your way out and pick up an insect gift or gift about the natural world including books, toys and games, and the Museum's official souvenir guidebook. Great for kids' presents, local and international tourists, or as a treat for yourself.

Winning photography shots on display

To raise awareness of the wonderful world of invertebrates, the Australian Museum runs an annual competition, Up Close & Spineless, to find Australia's best amateur and professional photos of invertebrates (animals without backbones).
