This is a whirlwind introduction into the art of Ancient Egyptian biography. Explore how ancient characters evolved from brief inscriptions of their names and titles, into detailed records of a person’s life and career. Join us as Dr Ryan examines the upper echelons of society and takes us through the various aspects of an individual’s life and how it was commemorated in hieroglyphs.

Dr Ellen Ryan

Ellen Ryan is currently a sessional teaching academic in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University and in the School of Humanities at the University of Sydney.

Dr Ellen Ryan is currently a sessional teaching academic in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University. Ellen was awarded a BA Ancient History (Hons I), Diploma of Ancient Languages, and PhD in Egyptology from Macquarie University, and an MPhil in Cuneiform Studies from the University of Oxford.

Ellen is a member of the Macquarie Theban Tombs Project fieldwork mission and has undertaken her own epigraphical research missions in Egypt. She is an Early Career Research affiliate of the Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE) at Macquarie University, and is a tutor for Egyptian hieroglyphs at the Macquarie Ancient Languages School.
