Abut the talk

The Heart of Neolithic Orkney on Scotland’s Orkney Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for some of the most iconic prehistoric monuments of Atlantic Europe: the Ring of Brodgar and Stones of Stenness; Maeshowe, a massive chambered tomb; and the exceptionally well preserved village of Skara Brae.

Recent research is radicalising our views of this culture from 5000 years ago. In particular the stunning discovery of a complex at the Ness of Brodgar enclosed within a large walled precinct is shedding new light on how this landscape was used and developed. Join Nick Card as he reveals a complex, stratified and dynamic society.

About the speaker

Nick Card is currently Is the Director of the Ness of Brodgar Excavations. Since graduating from Glasgow University with an MA Honours Archaeology, Nick has worked throughout Britain, but with particular emphasis on the Northern Isles of Scotland. Since the inscription of Orkney’s World Heritage Site he has been involved in research and fieldwork relating to the WHS, including directing the excavations at Bookan Chambered Tomb and the Neolithic complex on the Ness of Brodgar, as co-ordinator of the WHS geophysics programme, and as a contributor to the WHS Research Agenda. Nick also co- directed the major excavations at the Knowes of Trotty and Mine Howe.
