Excavated in 1900 in Thebes (modern day Luxor), the Museum's mummy is a popular resident who many visitors enjoy seeing right up close.

Bound in fragile linen wrappings and entombed in a painted, wooden coffin, the Egyptian woman's body was mummified during the Third Intermediate Period (664-525 BCE) and donated to the Museum in 1912.

Things to do

  • Discover how Museum scientists solved a 30-year-old mystery by conducting a CAT scan (in which multiple images of the inside of the body are taken) at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and learn about the mummy's life and fascinating treatment after death.
  • See captivating behind-the-scenes restoration images.
  • Don't miss the computer-animated 'Eternal Egypt' interactive, an IBM project bringing to light over 5000 years of Egyptian civilisation that lets you travel back to a time when Pharaohs ruled the world.
  • Browse through the Museum Shop on your way out and pick up a gift about past civilisations or the natural world including books, toys and games, and the Museum's official souvenir guidebook. Great for kids' presents, local and international tourists, or as a treat for yourself.

Eternal Egypt

Welcome to Eternal Egypt, which brings to light over five thousand years of Egyptian civilization. Eternal Egypt is a living record of a land rich in art and history, people and places, myths and religions. The stories of Eternal Egypt are told using the latest interactive technologies, high-resolution imagery, animations, virtual environments, remote cameras, three-dimensional models and more.
