Abstract
Use this guide to identify water bugs in a water sample.
Aquatic macroinvertebrates or ‘water bugs’ are animals found in streams, rivers, ponds, wetlands and drains. They provide an indication of stream health as they spend a large proportion of their existence in the water.
To assist with environmental monitoring, water bugs have been rated from 1 to 10 according to their sensitivity to pollution. The more sensitive a water bug is to common types of pollution, the higher the number assigned to it.
