For Arts Sake! – Visiting Bali #1

For the last two years I have been learning about classical Balinese paintings and the cultural practices behind this astonishing tradition. My guru is Siobhan Campbell - knowlegable, passionate and patient.

Today I am going to Bali to meet some of the artists I know through their paintings. It’s exciting. I’ll look in their studios, smell the paints and listen to their stories. Siobhan is already there. Let’s hope JetStar will bring me to Bali on time and we’ll meet as expected. My ears, eyes and camera are ready. Fingers crossed.

The classical Balinese paintings are produced in the village of Kamasan, Klungkung, but I am heading for Ubud first. I will be staying at the Puri Saraswati Bungalows, named after the Goddess of Arts, Knowledge and Wisdom; can’t have it better! This is in a town centre, a stone’s throw from the Ubud Royal Palace and Puri Lukisan (Art) Museum; a short walk to the Sacred Monkey Forest and the Great Temple of Death.
