Both centipedes and millipedes have many pairs of legs. Leaf litter, soil and the underside of logs are their preferred habitats.

Crustaceans have segmented bodies, seven or more pairs of appendages, two-branched limbs, gills and two pairs of antennae.

Worms include flatworms, roundworms and the segmented worms: earthworms, leeches and marine polychaete worms.

Fishes show a startling variety of body forms and behaviours. They range from the massive whale shark down to the smallest fishes that are adults at well under a centimetre in length.

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates that suckle their young and have hair. The three main groups are all represented in Australia.

The only native Australian amphibians, frogs have soft, moist skin, short straight ribs and a two phase life cycle.

Reptiles have scaly skin, long robust ribs encircling their internal organs, and have 'live' young or lay shelled eggs.
