Image Gallery: Yirrkala head ornaments

This is a look inside the treasures of the Museum's Aboriginal Collection featuring body adornment from the Yirrkala region of Ahrnemland in the Northern Territory. The cultural items in this collection were all made with natural fibres such as hand spun string made from plants, cane, panadus, feathers, human hair and wool.

These objects were collected through the early part of the 20th Century and reflect the continuing depth of knowledge in traditional craft that exist in Yirrkala which can be seen today through, "The Mulka Project". These objects inform people today not only of what people were wearing but what they were doing and how they were made.
