In January 2010, a small green turtle was noticed by staff at the Lizard Island Resort because of its unusual behaviour. It was sluggish and seemed to be unable to dive. Louise Dixon was concerned and became even more so when she noticed a reef shark circling. Lou called the Research Station and Directors Lyle Vail and Anne Hoggett captured the turtle easily. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority advised that the turtle needed medical attention so it was flown off the island to be cared for by Jenny Gilbert at a turtle rehabilitation centre in Cairns.

By July, Jenny pronounced that "Sammy" was well enough to be returned to the wild. She came back sporting a transmitter that would report her position to Argos satellites whenever she surfaced. Sammy was released at the Resort to great acclaim and has been staying around Lizard Island ever since.
