Etymology

Manucodia (old Javanese (Malay) Manuk dewata = birds of the gods); jobiensis (aftr Jobi Island).

Description

Sexually monomorphic. Adult males average 34 cm long; head blue-black with iridescent blue-green tips to feathers; mantle and back blue with iridescent blue and purple; nape, chin, throat and neck distinctly barred. Adult females somewhat smaller and significantly duller.

Diet

Fruits and arthropods.

Habitat

Lowland rainforests, swamps and the forest edges; 0-500 m, rarely 750 m.

Courtship

Solitary display occurs in trees; postures and movements undescribed.

Breeding

Presumed to be monogamous. Breeding season unknown; possibly occurs most months of the year over species’ range. Incubation and nestling details unknown. No hybridisation known.

Status and conservation

Not threatened; locally common.

Distribution

New Guinea: Jobi (Yapen) Island, northern mainland, small segment of lowlands in mid-south of West Papua, absent from western and eastern peninsulas.
